Description
“Advance and retard” refers to the adjustment of an engine’s ignition timing, which controls when the spark plug fires relative to the piston’s position. Advancing the timing means the spark fires earlier in the compression stroke, which can increase horsepower and responsiveness, while retarding it means the spark fires later, which can reduce the risk of detonation and make the engine run more efficiently at certain times.
